Trigger Point Injection

Understanding Trigger Point Injection Treatment:

Trigger point injections are used to relieve pain caused by tight, irritated muscle knots—often called trigger points—that form when a muscle cannot fully relax. These knots can develop in areas such as the neck, shoulders, upper back, and lower back, leading to discomfort, stiffness, and tension headaches. By delivering medication directly into the affected muscle, this treatment can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support overall muscle function in patients whose symptoms have not responded to stretching, physical therapy, or medication.

    How Trigger Point Injections Work:

Trigger points develop when muscle fibers become irritated by overuse, repetitive stress, trauma, or poor posture. These knots can remain tight and painful, sometimes causing referred pain in nearby areas. Trigger point injections use a small needle to deliver local anesthetic, steroid medication, or, in some cases, no medication at all (“dry needling”) directly into the affected muscle. This interrupts pain signaling, reduces inflammation, and relaxes the tightened muscle fibers.

    Preparing for and Undergoing Treatment:

To begin the treatment, the physician locates the painful trigger point by gently pressing on the affected muscle. The skin is then cleaned, and a small needle is inserted into the knot. Depending on the patient’s needs, the injection may include anesthetic medication, steroid medication, a combination of the two, or no medication in the case of dry needling.

The procedure is brief and does not typically require ultrasound guidance. Patients may be seated or lying down during the injection, and multiple trigger points may be treated in the same visit. Most patients can go home immediately afterward.

    Benefits and Conditions Treated:

Trigger point injections are commonly recommended for people with stubborn muscle pain that has not improved with conservative treatments. By addressing localized muscle knots, the injections can ease tension in the neck, shoulders, upper back, and other areas affected by trigger points.

These injections are often used to manage conditions such as fibromyalgia, tension headaches, and myofascial pain syndrome. They may also help patients whose pain is linked to repetitive movement, sports injuries, postural strain, or stress-related muscle tension. In some cases—particularly for patients allergic to anesthetics—dry needling can be used to release the muscle fibers without medication.

Aftercare, Risks, and When to Seek Attention

Most patients experience only mild soreness, lightheadedness, or temporary numbness around the injection site. More serious complications, such as bleeding or infection, are rare. Patients are generally advised to avoid strenuous activity for a few days but may use the treated muscle normally.

Pain relief may occur immediately due to the anesthetic or may take several days as the muscles relax. Patients should contact their physician if they experience significant swelling, worsening pain, or symptoms that do not improve over time.
