Understanding Flat Feet
Flat feet, or fallen arches, occur when the arches of the feet are low or absent, allowing the entire sole to touch the ground. Some people are born with this condition, while others develop it gradually due to injury, genetics, or wear and tear. Although many individuals experience no discomfort, flat feet can sometimes cause fatigue, pain, and difficulty with certain movements. With proper evaluation and care, most people can manage symptoms and stay active.
How Flat Feet Develop
The arch of the foot is formed by tendons that run along the foot and lower leg, pulling together to create the upward curve in the middle of the foot. When these tendons do not function properly or become overstretched, the arch may flatten. This can result in flexible flat feet, where the arch appears when sitting or standing on tiptoes but disappears during normal standing. In some children, the arch never fully develops, while in adults it may gradually collapse over time.
Flat feet can occur for several reasons, including congenital conditions, tendon injuries, and nerve-related disorders. Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis may weaken or inflame the structures that support the arch. One common cause is dysfunction of the posterior tibial tendon, which runs from the lower leg to the mid-foot and plays a key role in supporting the arch. When this tendon becomes inflamed or damaged, the foot may lose its normal shape and stability.
Recognizing the Symptoms
While some people with flat feet never develop symptoms, others notice pain or fatigue in the feet, legs, or lower back. Discomfort is often felt in the arches or heels, especially after long periods of standing or physical activity. Swelling along the inside of the ankle or sole may appear as the supporting tendons become strained.
Certain movements, such as standing on tiptoes or participating in high-impact sports, may be more difficult. Feet may tire more quickly during daily activities, and footwear can wear unevenly due to changes in weight distribution. When pain or mobility issues begin to interfere with daily life, evaluation by a specialist is recommended.
Treatment Options for Relief
When evaluating flat feet, an orthopedic doctor will review medical history, examine foot structure, and assess tendon strength. Imaging such as X-rays or MRIs may be used to better understand the underlying cause. Many cases can be managed with simple home care strategies, including rest, ice therapy, stretching exercises, and supportive footwear. Orthotics can help redistribute pressure and improve comfort, while physical therapy strengthens the muscles that support the arch. For pain or inflammation, doctors may recommend medications or corticosteroid injections to ease symptoms.
Long-Term Management and Prevention
Managing flat feet often involves making lifestyle adjustments that reduce stress on the feet. Avoiding high-impact sports, maintaining a healthy weight, and choosing shoes with proper arch support can help prevent worsening symptoms. Strengthening and flexibility exercises for the foot and ankle may improve stability and decrease discomfort over time.
In more severe cases, or when conservative treatments are unsuccessful, surgical intervention may be considered. Procedures can include repairing or repositioning tendons, removing bone spurs, or reshaping the bones of the foot to create better alignment. With proper diagnosis and ongoing care, individuals with flat feet can maintain comfort and function throughout their daily activities.
